During the summer, a large number of outdoor venues in Barcelona temporarily transform into rather unique cinema halls. This is something that in recent years has become a common experience for all of us living in Barcelona, making watching films outdoors almost a ritual.
All the film screenings and exhibitions are nocturnal, to avoid the daytime heat and enjoy the pleasant temperature that typically settles over the city after sunset.
Open-air cinema in Barcelona during the summer of 2026
There are so many organizations, Barcelona community centres (Centres Cívics), and institutions that organize open-air cinema sessions in Barcelona that the variety of options available is vast; from children’s films, films in original version with subtitles (which encourages many tourists spending a few days in Barcelona to join in on these special cinema nights), action films, romantic films, great cinema classics, to some of the latest box-office hits.
Is open-air cinema in Barcelona free or do you have to pay?
According to the open-air film screening, the entrance can be either free or paid. In each of the listings for the open-air cinemas organised during the summer, we provide this information.
For free sessions, it is suggested to arrive early to avoid missing out on entry and, if possible, to secure a good spot. For paid sessions, it is recommended to purchase the ticket in advance (non-numbered) to avoid the risk of not having a seat.
Below, we provide general information (dates, times, location, film genre, etc.) about all the open-air film screenings this summer of 2026 in Barcelona, as well as a link for each case so you can expand the information and check the programme for all the films.
Are the films in original version with subtitles or dubbed?
As we have already mentioned, some of the film screenings show movies in their original version with subtitles (either in Spanish or Catalan), so we suggest you check carefully, both in the listings we provide below and on the official websites of the organisations and institutions that programme them.
Sala Montjuïc 2026 : Cinema a la Fresca
Surely the great classic of open-air cinema in Barcelona and the film series that has inspired many other organisations to carry out similar activities during the summer. The screenings are in the original version with subtitles, and before the film, live music is offered to make the wait more enjoyable while people settle in.
The film series, which is held in the gardens of the Santa Eulàlia moat at the Montjuïc Castle, is a paid event. If desired, you can enjoy the film screenings from one of the deckchairs available at the entrance (which sell out quickly), for an extra fee, or alternatively, bring your own towels, cushions, and various items to make yourself more comfortable.

Cinema Lliure a la Platja 2026
Since 2010, and thanks to Cinema Lliure a la Platja (Free Cinema on the Beach), it has been possible to enjoy open-air cinema in such a paradisiacal space as the beach. The films are shown in their original version, and admission is free.
What began as a proposal exclusively for the beach in Barcelona has also expanded to other beaches along the Catalan coastline; CEM beach – La Mar Bella (Barcelona), Palamós beach, Tossa de Mar beach, and Mataró beach.

Film Cycle Pantalla Pavelló 2026
The Mies Van der Rohe Pavilion, located at the foot of Montjuïc Mountain and almost right next to the Magic Fountain, has been one of the latest iconic places in the city to join the ‘trend’ of offering open-air cinema sessions in its facilities.
Since its first edition, it has done so through a thematic cycle focused on architecture and the built environment, and its relationship with the people who inhabit and interact with it. The films are screened outside the pavilion, and there are a limited number of chairs available.

Cosmonits (CosmoNights) Film 2026
CosmoCaixa also plays its part in these summer nights. This year 2026, the programme is somewhat different, as it will only take place over two nights and will not focus solely on the screening of a film, but rather a range of activities are scheduled. The documentary film on the programme will not be screened outdoors but will take place in the auditorium.

Open Stands at the Canódromo 2026
The stands of the Canódromo de Barcelona (Greyhound racing), home of the Parc d’Investigació Creativa (Creative Research Park), open their doors on Friday nights in July to offer an open-air film cycle focused on films about science, creativity, and technology.

Pantalla BDC
Pantalla BDC, that is, the Pantalla Barcelona Districte Cultural, brings together all the outdoor cinema screenings programmed during the summer in the civic centers of Barcelona. Thus, proposals from previous years, such as Cinema Jove a la Fresca at Casa del Rellotge or Cinema a la Fresca at the Cocheras de Sants, are now integrated into the Pantalla BDC cycle.
The particularity of the films programmed within the Pantalla BDC cycle, previously known simply as Pantalla Barcelona, is that all the films shown have been made in Catalonia.

Mecal Air 2026
Among Barcelona’s many open-air cinema events, Mecal Air stands out every year for its unique format. Rather than screening feature films, as is the case with almost every other summer cinema programme, it is a series of short film screenings. The screenings take place at the Can Framis Museum, in the Poblenou neighbourhood, just a short walk from the Glòries Tower and the Barcelona Design Museum.

Cinema a la Fresca L’Illa Diagonal 2026
At the back of l’Illa Diagonal are the Sant Joan de Déu Gardens, the location chosen by the shopping centre to screen its summer open-air cinema sessions.
It is a film showcase in which, depending on the edition, the type of films scheduled refers to a specific genre or is aimed at a particular type of audience, although films of all kinds are usually featured. With the purchase of a ticket, a seat on one of their sunloungers is provided.

Gandules 2026
The CCCB (Centre for Contemporary Culture of Barcelona) organises an open-air film cycle in the well-known Pati de les Dones (Courtyard of Women). Each year, the film cycle is dedicated to a specific theme. To attend, a ticket must be purchased, and before the film begins, one of the short films previously awarded by the CCCB is screened.

Doc’sNoctàmbuls 2026
The Ethnological Museum of Barcelona, in collaboration with the Filmoteca de Catalunya and IPEC, is one of the cultural venues in Barcelona that, for some time now, has taken advantage of the arrival of summer to offer open-air film sessions, typically in documentary format and in line with one of the temporary exhibitions at the museum itself.
