The American artist turned images from popular culture into icons of contemporary art and changed the way we think about the relationship between art, advertising and celebrity.
From 13 November 2026, Barcelona’s Palau Martorell will host Andy Warhol. Pop Icons, an exhibition bringing together more than 180 works, including paintings, screen prints, drawings, photographs and Polaroids. It offers a journey through the work of one of the 20th century’s most influential artists, exploring his distinctive way of turning everyday images into art.
Curated by Edoardo Falcioni and Lola Durán Úcar, the exhibition explores different sides of Warhol’s creativity, from his famous images of consumer products to his portraits of well-known figures and his links with music and mass culture.
Andy Warhol, the artist who turned everyday life into art

Andy Warhol (1928–1987) was one of the leading figures of Pop Art, an artistic movement inspired by advertising, commercial products, cinema, television and magazines. Rather than separating art from everyday life, Warhol made familiar objects and recognisable faces the focus of his work.
His background in design and commercial illustration influenced the way he worked with images. Repetition, vivid colours and mass-production techniques became defining features of his artistic style.
Warhol was also fascinated by fame and by the way the media shape celebrities’ public image. His portraits do more than depict well-known people: they also reflect a society captivated by stars, advertising and the constant circulation of images.

Andy Warhol’s best-known works and icons
The Andy Warhol. Pop Icons exhibition brings together more than 180 works that explore different aspects of his creative world. His most recognisable images offer a clear picture of Andy Warhol’s visual iconography, showing how he turned consumer products, famous faces and references to popular culture into works that have become part of the history of contemporary art.
Campbell’s soup cans
Campbell’s soup cans are among the best-known symbols of Pop Art. Warhol took the image of a product commonly found in American supermarkets and brought it into the world of art, challenging the distinction between everyday objects and works displayed in museums.
The repetition of the cans and their commercial appearance show how a familiar image can take on a different meaning when placed in a new context. An industrial product thus became one of the most recognisable visual icons of 20th-century art.
Marilyn Monroe and celebrity portraits
Marilyn Monroe‘s portraits are among Warhol’s most iconic works. Using photographs of the actress, the artist created compositions characterised by repeated images of her face and the use of vivid, contrasting colours.
Warhol also portrayed other well-known figures, including Elizabeth Taylor, Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson. In these works, each person’s image becomes a visual reflection on fame and on the way the media shape celebrities’ public identities.
Music and album covers
Music was another major source of inspiration for Warhol. His links with the music scene and his interest in artists’ public image led him to design album covers that are now part of the history of graphic design and popular culture.
His influence extended beyond painting and galleries. Warhol’s visual language also reached the music industry, helping to blur the boundaries between fine art, design and the entertainment world.
Screen prints, photographs, drawings and Polaroids
Warhol’s artistic output spans a range of formats and techniques. Alongside his paintings and screen prints, his photographs, drawings and Polaroids offer an insight into the way he observed the world and experimented with images.
The variety of works brought together in the exhibition provides a broader view of his career and helps visitors understand how he developed his own artistic language using images from very different fields.
Pop Art: between art, advertising and consumerism
Pop Art emerged during a period of major social and cultural change, when television, cinema, illustrated magazines and advertising began to play a central role in everyday life. Artists associated with the movement drew inspiration from images circulating in the media and from products that had become part of consumer society.
Warhol developed this idea into one of its most recognisable forms. He used photographs, commercial packaging and famous faces to create works in which repetition and reproduction became just as important as the original image.
His work raises questions about the value of art, the influence of advertising and the construction of fame. His approach to familiar images remains relevant in a society dominated by photography, digital communication and social media.
