If you decide to join the special events marking the 125th anniversary of the Tramvia Blau, why not round off the day with a visit to Tibidabo Amusement Park? It is very close to Avinguda del Tibidabo, so you can take the opportunity to head up the mountain and enjoy one of Barcelona’s most iconic landmarks.
One option is to take the Cuca de Llum, the Tibidabo funicular, which connects Plaça del Doctor Andreu with the summit in around four minutes. Once at the top, you can spend the day at the amusement park, with attractions for different age groups and magnificent views over Barcelona.
If you prefer a more relaxed outing or would rather not buy a ticket for the park, you can also visit the Tibidabo Panoramic Area, which is free to enter, and take a walk along the Camí del Cel. From here, you can enjoy sweeping views of Barcelona and explore the surroundings without having to use all the rides. Bear in mind, however, that the funicular is charged separately if your ticket does not include it.
Before planning your visit, check the Tibidabo opening hours, as the amusement park and the Panoramic Area have different opening schedules.
A chance to see Tibidabo’s historic tram
Officially inaugurated on 29 October 1901, the Tramvia Blau has witnessed more than a century of change on Tibidabo mountain and in the surrounding area. Its distinctive blue bodywork has made it a familiar sight in Barcelona and an important part of the city’s historic heritage.
To mark the anniversary, tram car number 5 will be brought to Avinguda del Tibidabo on Saturday 31 October, where it will be on display for visitors to see up close. The exhibition will continue on Sunday 1 November, with visiting hours from 10 am to 8 pm.
Saturday’s programme will also include a traditional hot chocolate gathering open to the public, one of the main events of the celebration. It will be a chance to enjoy the festive atmosphere and remember the role this form of transport has played in Barcelona’s history.
Open days at the Tramvia Blau workshops
The celebrations marking the Tramvia Blau’s 125th anniversary will continue on 14 and 15 November 2026, when the Tramvia Blau workshops will open to visitors. This is where the historic tram vehicles are kept. These additional open days will offer a look inside the premises where the tram is stored and an insight into the work involved in preserving and maintaining it.
TMB will also issue a commemorative ticket for the 125th anniversary. During November, TMB’s Espai Mercè Sala will host an exhibition exploring the tram’s history, its role in the development of Tibidabo and its significance as a symbol of Barcelona’s collective memory. For details of the workshop visits and exhibition, check TMB’s official channels.
125 years of Tramvia Blau history
The Tramvia Blau holds a special place in the history of transport in Barcelona. When the city’s street trams disappeared in 1971, it survived as the last remaining representative of the former network. In 1979, Sociedad Anónima El Tibidabo handed it over to the city, and in 1981 TMB took over the management, maintenance and preservation of the vehicles.
Its heritage value has also received official recognition. In May 2023, the Government of Catalonia declared 30 important elements of Catalonia’s railway heritage to be Cultural Assets of National Interest (BCIN). These included Tramvia Blau cars 2, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10, as well as jardinera 129, an open-sided tram converted from car number 9.
This recognition helps protect a legacy that forms part of Barcelona’s history and the evolution of its public transport network. The 125th anniversary provides another opportunity to get to know the Tramvia Blau and reflect on its connection with Tibidabo and generations of Barcelona residents.
