Sónar Barcelona Festival 2022

Updated Jul 21 2023

Whether you’re a music-lover or not, there are not many people nowadays who hasn’t heard of Sónar Festival. This electronic and experimental music festival in Barcelona, known as Music Creativity & Technology Festival, started its journey with the aim of giving a space to what seemed to be a small sector in the music spectrum.

As each year of the Sónar Festival passed, it continued to grow until becoming one of the most important music events and festivals in the sector, both in Europe and worldwide.

Origin and evolution of the Sónar Festival

The parents of this ambitious project, who saw its first edition in 1994, were musicians and specialists in the visual arts, Sergio Caballero and Enric Palau and the music journalist, Ricard Robles.

With around 60,000 attendees, the first year of the Sónar festival was a real hit, and over the following years the participants and accredited national and international media coming to report the event increased significantly.

All of this meant that the venue of the first Sónar by Night (Sónar de Noche), which used to take place at the Sala Apolo in Barcelona, had to change to Poble Espanyol. On the other hand, Sónar by Day (Sónar de Día) still takes place in the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona and its surroundings, such as Plaza dels Ángels.

Today, Sónar has continued to grow and evolve, the number of scheduled activities increasing. Currently, Sónar by Night takes place at the Fira Gran Vía L’Hospitalet and Sónar by Day at Fira Montjuïc.

The Sónar Festival is held each year for a full weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) in the month of July, and is divided into what we could call two “Sónars”, called Sónar by Day and Sónar by Night, which, as their names indicate, refer to the festival’s concerts, shows and activities that on one hand are held during the day and, on the other hand, during the evening.
