W Barcelona Hotel

Updated Jun 05 2023

In 2009, after a lot of controversy over its construction right on the seafront, the W Barcelona hotel was opened, which belongs to the W Hotels chain. Thanks to the similarity of its silhouette to a sailing boat, it’s also popularly known as ‘Hotel Vela’ (‘the Sail Hotel’).

Information about the W Hotel Barcelona

Situated just behind the Sant Sebastià beach, at the Barceloneta neighborhood, its silhouette is visible from many points along the seafront, and also from some of Barcelona’s viewpoints, which has made the W Barcelona Hotel an iconic point of reference along the city’s skyline.

Designed by the Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill, the hotel stands at a height of 99 metres, and its façade is covered in glass so that, depending on the time of day, the colouration of the building changes according to the sun’s reflection.

>Going into the W Barcelona Hotel

The W Barcelona Hotel is a truly luxurious hotel, and it won’t surprise you to learn that staying there is way beyond most people’s budgets. However, some people do decide to reserve a night there, just to see for themselves what the experience of staying in one of Barcelona’s best hotels is like.

If you’d like to see inside the ‘Sail Hotel’, there’s absolutely no problem in going into the lobby, because there are areas of the hotel where the public are welcome to go to, such as some of the bars and restaurants. It’s definitely worth going in, because the design of the inside will surprise you as much as the outside, and you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy views of the beach from some of the areas within the hotel.

Wet Bar

W Bars, W restaurants and W terraces

None of the W Hotel’s bars, restaurants and terraces are exactly cheap, but if you don’t mind spending a bit more money to enjoy a drink, or if you’d like to treat yourself, it’s definitely worth it, because from some of the bars you’ll get a beautiful view of the area.
