The La Barceloneta Festival, as its name suggests, is the traditional festival of the historic La Barceloneta neighbourhood. It is held in honour of Saint Michael (Sant Miquel in Catalan), whose feast day falls on 29 September.
Over several days at the end of September, the La Barceloneta Residents’ Association and the La Barceloneta Festival Committee, together with various local organisations and many residents, organise a wide range of events and activities.
Key information about the La Barceloneta Festival
The origins of the La Barceloneta Festival appear to date back to 1855, when a major celebration was held to mark the centenary of the neighbourhood.
Since then, the neighbourhood has continued to celebrate its annual festival in honour of its patron saint, Sant Miquel del Port (Saint Michael of the Port), whose name is also given to the beautiful Baroque church dedicated to him in La Barceloneta Square.
The strong attachment that residents feel towards their festival is evident every year, both in the large numbers of people who take part and in the varied programme of activities. Alongside concerts, children’s activities and other leisure events, local traditions play an important role, including habanera singing, sardana dancing, street parades and exhibitions on the history of the neighbourhood.

Although it may seem like a coincidence, the fact that several days of the La Barceloneta Festival coincide with La Mercè, or, in other words, with the Barcelona Festival, only serves to reinforce the sense of identity and belonging that residents have towards what, for them, is much more than just a neighbourhood.

If the 2026 edition of the La Barceloneta Festival had to be summed up in a few words, the most fitting would probably be “variety“, “tradition” and “entertainment“. In fact, these are features that tend to be present in every edition, but they are certainly worth highlighting.

The Cannon Tradition of La Barceloneta
One of the most traditional and eagerly awaited activities of the La Barceloneta Festival, especially among children, is the Cannon Procession. It takes place on 29 September (and, for some years now, also on the following Saturday), when a man dressed as a Napoleonic general walks through the streets of the neighbourhood accompanied by the “capgròs” (giant-headed figure) representing him, firing volleys of sweets from a cannon.
Although various stories are often told about the origins of this unusual procession, what is certain is that the tradition began in 1912, thanks to Pancraç Farell.
The year before, this resident of the La Barceloneta neighbourhood had spent a few days in the French village where his wife’s family lived. During the village festivities, he was struck by this curious tradition and liked it so much that he decided to bring it to his own neighbourhood.
After taking place for several years, the cannon eventually came under the care of the rector of Sant Miquel Parish. When the children found out, they went to the church chanting “Senyor rector volem el canó” (Catalan for “Reverend Father, we want the cannon”).
Since then, it has been precisely after these calls from the children that the Napoleonic general fires volleys from his cannon, while the children scramble to collect all the sweets scattered across the ground.

The strong sense of community in La Barceloneta has always gone hand in hand with a strong spirit of solidarity among its residents. This is also reflected in the festival programme, which every year includes a variety of charitable and awareness-raising activities and initiatives supporting those who need them most.
