Festa Major Poblenou 2026

Updated Sep 02 2026

As with many other neighbourhood festivals in Barcelona, the Festa Major del Poblenou takes place towards the end of summer, when the weather is usually still good, but daytime temperatures are no longer quite as high.

The Festes del Poblenou, organised with the support of Barcelona City Council, are coordinated by the Coordinadora de Entidades del Poblenou and the Associació de Comissions de Festes de Carrers (ACR). This allows a large number of the neighbourhood’s cultural and community organisations to get involved in the celebrations.

Brief information about the Festa Major del Poblenou

The Festa Major del Poblenou places a strong emphasis on the traditions and identity of the neighbourhood. Throughout the festival, a wide range of activities is organised to preserve and promote local popular culture, including street parades, late-night and early-morning celebrations, the gathering of giant figures and the ‘correfoc’ organised by the ‘Colla de Diables del Poblenou’.

Origins and history of the Festa Major del Poblenou

The Festa Major del Poblenou was traditionally held in the cold month of December, but since 1872 it has been celebrated in the first half of September, when temperatures are much more pleasant.

During the final two decades of the 20th century, the organisations involved in the festivities made a major effort to revitalise the celebrations, strengthening traditional events while introducing new activities and ideas.

One of the initiatives was the introduction of a spectacular finale: the fireworks display on the beach, which has since become a much-loved tradition and one of the highlights of the festivities. The Gigantes del Poblenou were also brought back, while the Colla de Diables was established to organise a correfoc.

Despite the many changes the neighbourhood has undergone, some of them dramatic and relatively recent, particularly to its physical appearance, Poblenou remains one of the most authentic neighbourhoods in Barcelona. It continues to preserve the spirit and character of the working-class industrial neighbourhood it once was.
