When are the Christmas lights switched on in Barcelona in 2026?
The official switch-on of Barcelona’s Christmas lights will take place on Thursday 26 November 2026. The date appears in the city council’s calendar of major events, which presents the ceremony as the start of the Christmas lighting across the city’s streets and squares.
The opening show usually features a specially created artistic production combining music, lighting and live performances. In 2025, it took place on Passeig de Gràcia and combined aerial dance, a light installation and a choir made up of voices from all ten districts of Barcelona.
For 2026, the switch-on date is confirmed, but the exact location of the show, its time and the artistic programme have yet to be confirmed in the municipal information consulted.
Once the opening ceremony is over, the lights are officially switched on across the different areas of the city. The displays cover major shopping avenues as well as neighbourhood streets, squares, markets and selected heritage sites.

What is known about Barcelona’s Christmas lighting programme for 2026-2027?
Barcelona City Council has published the tender and awarded the contract for the 2026-2027 Christmas lighting programme. The documentation covers the lighting of public roads during the festive season and includes several separate lots of work.
The streets and locations covered by the contract include La Rambla, Rambla de Prim, Passeig de Maragall, Plaça d’Urquinaona and Avinguda del Paral·lel, as well as work relating to markets and decorative features. The campaign aims to illuminate more than 130 kilometres of streets and introduce new artist-designed lighting installations on Rambla de Prim and Passeig de Maragall.
The programme also includes plans to illuminate more than 50 ornamental fountains and expand the lighting on municipal market façades. The city council also plans to bring back the galets designed by Ramon Bigas, an element associated with Barcelona’s Christmas traditions.
The Barcelona Christmas lights festival has a budget of €4.6 million, with 65% expected to be funded through the tourist accommodation tax (IEET).
This documentation provides an insight into some of the planned work, but it is not a substitute for the definitive map of the Christmas lights for visitors, nor does it confirm the final design or operating hours of every installation.
Consult the municipal contract for Barcelona’s 2026-2027 Christmas lighting.
Is it free to see Barcelona’s Christmas lights?
Yes. Walking around the illuminated streets, squares and avenues is free. You can also admire the Christmas lights on Casa Batlló and the special lighting on the Nativity façade of the Sagrada Família from outside, when these displays are running.
However, Christmas experiences that require entry to a venue, such as Els Llums de Sant Pau, charge admission and have their own dates, access conditions and ticketing arrangements.
How to get to the main illuminated areas
Public transport is usually the most convenient way to explore the Christmas lights in central Barcelona, particularly on busy days. Plaça de Catalunya, Passeig de Gràcia, Plaça d’Urquinaona and Via Laietana all have metro and bus connections that provide access to different parts of the route.
Plaça de Catalunya is a convenient starting point for connecting with La Rambla, Portal de l’Àngel and Passeig de Gràcia. Passeig de Gràcia station provides access to the avenue of the same name and the Eixample district, while Urquinaona is useful for reaching Via Laietana and the historic centre.
If you are attending the opening event, check the city council’s latest information on possible road closures, bus diversions and access restrictions. The arrangements in place in 2025 should not be assumed to apply in 2026.
Tips for seeing Barcelona’s Christmas lights
- Avoid the busiest times: central streets tend to be particularly crowded during the first few days of the lights and at weekends in December.
- Plan a walking route: several of the main illuminated shopping streets can be linked on foot, without needing to travel by vehicle between each area.
- Check the updated map: designer installations, illuminated figures and neighbourhood displays can change from one season to the next. The city council’s Christmas website will offer themed routes that also take in illuminated fountains, landmark shops and window displays created by design schools.
- Check the times before setting out: do not assume that the 2025 hours still apply until the council publishes the schedule for 2026-2027.
- Allow time to explore the neighbourhoods: the lighting extends beyond the main tourist centre. The new designer lighting locations on Rambla de Prim and Passeig de Maragall offer more options for alternative routes.
- Book tickets for paid attractions in advance: sessions at Els Llums de Sant Pau have their own capacity limits and schedule.
Barcelona, European Christmas Capital 2026
The 2026 Christmas season has an added attraction: Barcelona has been named European Christmas Capital 2026. The accolade recognises the city’s approach to celebrating Christmas, bringing together street lighting, popular traditions, shopping and a cultural programme spread across its different neighbourhoods.
Lighting is one of the key elements of this approach. In recent years, Barcelona has introduced projects designed specifically for particular streets and squares, with displays intended to stand apart from conventional festive decorations and reflect the architecture, design and identity of each location.
The aim is to ensure that Christmas is not concentrated solely in the tourist centre. Alongside the main shopping streets, the municipal programme includes installations in neighbourhood streets, municipal markets, ornamental fountains, public spaces and distinctive buildings. For the 2026-2027 season, the city also plans to bring back the galets designed by Ramon Bigas, an element associated with Barcelona’s Christmas traditions.
The European Christmas Capital designation reinforces the city’s ambition to offer a creative celebration that is open to everyone. The municipal Christmas website will feature a map with themed routes to help visitors find landmark shops, illuminated fountains, designer lighting installations, shopping streets and window displays created by design schools. These routes will showcase attractions across different neighbourhoods, beyond the usual central areas.
The main streets and areas for seeing Christmas lights in Barcelona
The main shopping streets in the city centre are a good starting point for enjoying Barcelona’s Christmas lights. In previous seasons, highlights have included Passeig de Gràcia, Plaça de Catalunya, Gran Via, Carrer d’Aragó and Via Laietana, along with La Rambla, the historic centre and shopping streets in the neighbourhoods.
The full map of the 2026-2027 lighting programme has not yet been published. The locations below are included as a guide based on previous seasons, but the continuation of every design has not been confirmed.
Passeig de Gràcia: one of Barcelona’s main Christmas highlights
Passeig de Gràcia is one of Barcelona’s most emblematic avenues and a popular route for enjoying the festive atmosphere. Its combination of Modernista buildings, shops, hotels and large shop windows makes it one of the highlights of the Christmas season.
In 2024 and 2025, the avenue hosted the opening show for the Christmas lights. The 2025 production combined aerial dance, music and artistic lighting, with a choir made up of forty voices from Barcelona’s ten districts.
Alongside the street lighting, special displays on buildings such as Casa Batlló are another seasonal highlight. It is worth remembering that the municipal lighting along the avenue and the façade shows are separate initiatives, even though visitors can enjoy them during the same walk.
Christmas 2026-2027: the date of the general switch-on is confirmed for 26 November, but the location of this year’s opening show has yet to be announced.
Plaça de Catalunya: Christmas lights in the heart of Barcelona
Plaça de Catalunya connects Passeig de Gràcia, La Rambla, Portal de l’Àngel and the streets of the historic centre. Its central location makes it one of the most convenient places to start a Christmas walk.
In 2025, the square hosted the designer installation El cor de la ciutat, by ARTEC Light Studio. The display created a choreography of light inspired by birds in flight and the formation of hearts, with a composition visible both during the day and at night.
The square is also often a venue for Christmas activities and family events throughout December. To find out which installation will be placed there in 2026-2027, visitors will need to consult the new season’s municipal map.
2025 information: the name, creator and features of El cor de la ciutat refer to the previous season.
Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes: a major corridor of light
Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes is one of Barcelona’s main urban thoroughfares and has been part of the city’s municipal Christmas lighting programme.
In 2025, the designer project Espelmes de llum, created by A.P.O. (Antoni Pallejà Office), reinterpreted traditional candles through illuminated elements suspended above the street and LED filaments. The installation ran between Carrer de Muntaner and Passeig de Sant Joan.
Thanks to its length, Gran Via allows visitors to link different parts of the Eixample district and combine a Christmas walk with other illuminated areas of central Barcelona.
2025 information: the project, its creator and the section of the avenue described refer to the previous season.
Carrer d’Aragó: lighting inspired by Christmas at home
Carrer d’Aragó is another of the Eixample’s main thoroughfares and has hosted designer lighting projects. In 2025, it featured El Nadal a casa, created by SMLXL + MA-MA.
The display drew inspiration from the warmth of Christmas at home and from the everyday expressions and messages associated with the festive season. It used large illuminated messages with a friendly, humorous tone, designed to appeal to people of different ages.
2025 information: the design and its location refer to the previous season and should not be assumed to be confirmed for 2026-2027.
Via Laietana: contemporary design and urban heritage
Via Laietana connects the Eixample with the waterfront and the Old Town. Following its urban transformation, it became part of the 2025 designer lighting programme.
The project Flor, by Esther Pujol of Nahtrang Studio and Marta Cerdà, took its inspiration from the panot de flor, one of Barcelona’s best-known pavement designs. The installation used LED arches with floral motifs to link contemporary design with the city’s visual identity.
In 2025, the display extended between Plaça d’Urquinaona and Passeig de Colom, with around twenty illuminated arches.
2025 information: the Flor installation and its features relate to the previous season.
Passeig de Sant Joan: comic-inspired Christmas lighting
Passeig de Sant Joan is a good alternative for extending your walk beyond the busiest central streets. The avenue offers a pleasant route past residential buildings, shops and terraces, running from the Arc de Triomf area towards Plaça de Tetuan.
The Brosmind studio created an installation featuring comic-book windows, references to manga and the kawaii aesthetic, and Christmas messages. First introduced in an earlier season, the project continued to be part of the designer lighting programme in 2025.
Its distinctive visual style and the space available for walking make it an appealing option for families and anyone looking for something different from the usual strings of lights.
2025 information: the continuation of this installation in the 2026-2027 season has yet to be confirmed.
La Rambla and the historic centre
La Rambla is one of Barcelona’s best-known promenades and a popular route during the festive season. Running from Plaça de Catalunya to the Columbus Monument, it allows visitors to combine the Christmas atmosphere with shopping streets, La Boqueria market and the squares of the Gothic Quarter.
The historic centre also has other places worth checking on the Christmas lights map, including Plaça de Sant Jaume, the area around the Cathedral and the shopping streets of Ciutat Vella.
In 2025, Plaça de Sant Jaume was one of the highlights of the Christmas audiovisual programme, with projections on the façades of institutional buildings. Details of the next edition have yet to be confirmed.
Plaça de les Glòries and the DHub area
The area around Plaça de les Glòries and Disseny Hub Barcelona has also featured illuminated displays in previous seasons. It is an interesting place to discover installations in a contemporary urban setting and extend your route beyond the traditional central avenues.
In 2025, the programme included installations around the DHub. For Christmas 2026-2027, visitors will need to check which displays return and what new features are introduced.
Barcelona’s landmark buildings and monuments illuminated at Christmas
As well as the streets and squares decorated by the city council, various buildings and monuments in Barcelona offer special lighting displays, audiovisual projections and light trails during the Christmas season. Some can be viewed free of charge from the street; others, such as Els Llums de Sant Pau, are seasonal experiences that require a ticket.
Some new features have already been confirmed for the 2026-2027 season, while other venues have yet to publish their exact dates. The following sections distinguish information for the new season from the 2025 times, which are useful as a reference but should not be treated as a definitive schedule.
Casa Batlló: Christmas lighting on the façade
Casa Batlló, one of Antoni Gaudí’s great works on Passeig de Gràcia, has become one of the most popular buildings in Barcelona for viewing Christmas lights. During the festive season, its Modernista façade is transformed by a display of light, colour and music, which can be enjoyed free of charge from the street.
Casa Batlló has announced that its Christmas lighting will return in late November 2026 and continue until 6 January 2027. The initiative will also continue its commitment to neurodiversity. The exact start date and the times of this season’s displays have yet to be confirmed in the information consulted.
2025 information: the lights could be seen from 22 November 2025 to 6 January 2026. The opening event took place on 22 November at 7 pm, with displays every half hour until 9.30 pm. For the rest of the season, the hours were 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm, with each display lasting around three minutes.
The 2025 edition was linked to an autism awareness initiative and involved Fundación Adana and Associació Aprenem Autisme. The theme of the next edition must be confirmed when Casa Batlló publishes its full programme.
Access: the exterior lighting is free to view from Passeig de Gràcia. You do not need a ticket to visit the inside of the building.
Official Casa Batlló information about its 2026 activities and Christmas lights.
Sagrada Família: lighting on the Nativity façade
The Sagrada Família also features special lighting at Christmas. The display highlights the sculptural groups on the Nativity façade, created by Antoni Gaudí, allowing visitors to view from outside scenes associated with the birth of Jesus, the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Adoration of the Three Kings.
The lighting of the sculptures should not be confused with the basilica’s usual illumination or with audiovisual projection shows. It is a specific display designed to highlight the details of the façade.
2025 information: the lighting could be viewed from 30 November 2025 to 6 January 2026, between 6.30 pm and 10 pm. Viewing the display from outside was free.
Christmas 2026-2027: the dates and times for the new season have yet to be confirmed. The basilica’s official Christmas page is the best place to check the programme once it is published.
Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site: Els Llums de Sant Pau 2026-2027
The Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site hosts one of Barcelona’s most extensive Christmas light experiences. Unlike façades that can be viewed from the street, Els Llums de Sant Pau takes visitors on a route through the gardens and outdoor spaces of the Modernista complex, with light installations, projection mapping, music and interactive features.
The 2026-2027 edition has been confirmed and will take inspiration from The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The experience will run from 19 November 2026 to 10 January 2027.
The route will combine thousands of points of light, large-scale projections on the Modernista architecture, theatrical sets, music, interactive installations, live performers and puppets. There will also be large illuminated sculptures, a passport for visiting different planets and an ice rink included in the experience.
The organisers have announced the following closure dates: 24 and 31 December 2026 and 5 January 2027. Admission requires a ticket and entry is organised into booked time slots.
Announced prices for 2026-2027: tickets start at €10 on the so-called Prince Days, which fall on six dates in November. On reduced-price dates, standard admission costs €14.90 and the reduced rate is €12.40; on regular-price dates, the respective prices are €17.90 and €15.40. Prices may vary depending on the date and ticket type selected.
The ice rink costs extra on top of general admission: €6 for a 20-minute session or €12 for a 30-minute VIP session. Check access conditions and availability when purchasing tickets.

Plaça de Sant Jaume: projections on institutional buildings
Plaça de Sant Jaume, in the heart of the historic centre, has hosted Christmas light projections on the façades of institutional buildings. This is different from the street lighting: the façades become the canvas for an artistic intervention combining architecture and light.
2025 information: from 22 November 2025 to 5 January 2026, visitors could see Simfonia d’estels, a work by Xavi Bobé Estudio projected onto the façades of the Generalitat and City Hall. The composition connected architecture, the sky and Christmas traditions, without sound or words.
The 2025 schedule was Monday to Thursday, 6.30 pm to 10 pm, and Fridays, Saturdays, the eves of public holidays and public holidays, 6.30 pm to 11 pm.
Christmas 2026-2027: the new projection, dates and times have yet to be confirmed. The same show should not be assumed to return.

Torre Bellesguard: a sunlit star on Christmas Day
Torre Bellesguard, designed by Antoni Gaudí in Sant Gervasi, conceals an unusual light phenomenon associated with Christmas Day. One of its stained-glass windows was positioned so that, under certain conditions, sunlight passes through the glass and projects an eight-pointed star onto the wall of the interior staircase.
According to a report published by betevé, this phenomenon traditionally occurs on 25 December, at around 4.30 pm. It is not an ornamental night-time lighting display or a projection-mapping show, but a natural light effect linked to Gaudí’s architecture.
Christmas 2026: the current visibility of the phenomenon and the arrangements for any special visits have yet to be confirmed. Before travelling there, check whether the monument is open that day and whether visitors can access the area where the star appears.
Casa Batlló Mapping: an audiovisual show outside the Christmas season
Casa Batlló also organises an annual architectural projection-mapping show, using audiovisual projections to transform its Modernista façade. Although it is one of Barcelona’s major light events, it is important to distinguish it from the Christmas lighting: it traditionally takes place in late January or early February, outside the Christmas period.
In 2025, the projection-mapping show Arborescent, by artist Quayola, took place on 1 and 2 February. The work explored plant forms and the structures of nature through digital projections on Gaudí’s façade. Shows ran every half hour between 7.45 pm and 10.45 pm, lasting around ten minutes each.
In 2026, Casa Batlló’s projection-mapping show took place on 31 January and 1 February under the title Hidden Order, created by United Visual Artists. The work explored the relationships between nature, geometry, perception and technology.
The next edition, in 2027, has yet to be confirmed. It is worth considering when planning a visit to Barcelona, but it should not be presented as part of the Christmas programme in November and December.
Check previous editions of Casa Batlló’s projection-mapping show.
Christmas lights in Barcelona’s neighbourhoods
Christmas lighting is not limited to the main avenues in the city centre. Shopping associations, neighbourhood organisations and the city council work together to bring the lights to streets and squares across Barcelona’s ten districts, supporting local businesses and creating a festive atmosphere throughout the city.
For the 2026-2027 season, the city council plans to illuminate more than 130 kilometres of streets, working with shopping streets and commercial associations. The programme covers different districts and combines traditional lighting with new decorative concepts and designer installations.
Among the announced additions are two new locations for designer lighting: Rambla de Prim and Passeig de Maragall. These additions will extend the routes beyond the most central areas. The full selection of designs and their locations will be available once the official campaign map is published.
The 2026-2027 programme includes installations in the districts of Ciutat Vella, L’Eixample, Sants-Montjuïc, Les Corts, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, Gràcia, Horta-Guinardó and Sant Andreu, as well as other areas and shopping streets across the city.
Illuminated totems and structures
In recent seasons, Barcelona has introduced large decorative features in several neighbourhoods. These structures, featuring Christmas motifs and illuminated designs, create new points of interest in squares and public spaces.
2025 information: the programme included more than twenty illuminated structures across the city. The number and locations for 2026-2027 have yet to be confirmed.
Ornamental fountains and distinctive buildings
Christmas lighting has also been extended to ornamental fountains and the façades of distinctive buildings. These displays bring heritage sites and lesser-known corners of Barcelona into the Christmas routes.
For the 2026-2027 season, the city council plans to illuminate more than 50 ornamental fountains. This initiative creates more opportunities to discover different parts of the city during Christmas walks and highlights urban features that are not usually included in the main routes.
2025 information: examples from previous seasons include the fountain in Plaça de la Mercè, the fountain in Plaça de Francesc Macià, the waterfall in Parc de la Ciutadella and other features in different districts. The definitive list of fountains to be illuminated in 2026-2027 will be included in the municipal map.
Municipal markets also get Christmas lights
Municipal markets also help create a festive atmosphere in Barcelona’s neighbourhoods. Alongside their usual activities, many organise special events over Christmas and support local businesses.
For 2026-2027, the city plans to expand the Christmas lighting on municipal market façades, with the aim of extending the festive atmosphere and supporting commercial activity in neighbourhoods.
2025 information: the municipal programme included Christmas lighting on the façades of all 39 municipal markets. The precise scope of the planned expansion for 2026-2027 will need to be checked against the final programme.
Designer Christmas lights in Barcelona
One of the defining features of Barcelona’s Christmas lighting is its focus on installations conceived specifically for particular streets and squares. The city council promotes this approach in collaboration with ADI-FAD, aiming to give the lighting its own visual identity and encourage the participation of design professionals.
Five proposals were selected for the 2025-2026 season:
- Plaça de Catalunya — El cor de la ciutat: ARTEC Light Studio created a light composition inspired by birds in flight and the formation of hearts.
- Gran Via — Espelmes de llum: A.P.O. reinterpreted traditional candles through suspended illuminated elements and LED filaments.
- Carrer d’Aragó — El Nadal a casa: SMLXL + MA-MA created Christmas messages with an everyday, humorous tone.
- Via Laietana — Flor: Esther Pujol of Nahtrang Studio and Marta Cerdà drew inspiration from Barcelona’s flower-shaped pavement tile, the panot de flor.
- Passeig de Sant Joan: Brosmind continued with its visual style based on comic-book windows, manga references and festive motifs.
These installations aimed to connect the lighting with the identity of each location and offer a different experience along each street.
2026-2027 information: the call for new artist-designed lighting installations is under way and covers several types of installation, including suspended urban elements, public-space installations, distinctive features and architectural lighting. In addition to locations used in previous seasons, new proposals have been announced for Rambla de Prim and Passeig de Maragall. At the time of writing, the final selection and the details of each project have yet to be confirmed.

A route for enjoying Barcelona’s Christmas lights
A simple way to enjoy the Christmas lights is to spend an afternoon in central Barcelona, combining the main shopping avenues with some of the squares in the Old Town. The final route for 2026-2027 will need to be adjusted to the installations shown on the updated municipal map.
As a guide based on locations featured in previous seasons, you could start at Plaça de Catalunya and continue along Passeig de Gràcia, where Casa Batlló is located. From there, extend your walk towards Gran Via and Carrer d’Aragó before heading towards Plaça d’Urquinaona and Via Laietana.
Another option is to head to Plaça de Sant Jaume and then explore the streets of the Gothic Quarter and La Rambla. This combines urban lighting with Barcelona’s historic surroundings, as well as shop windows and individual Christmas decorations.
For a different experience, set aside another afternoon for Els Llums de Sant Pau. Its 2026-2027 edition is confirmed to run from 19 November to 10 January and features an immersive experience inspired by The Little Prince. It is a separate attraction from the public street lighting and requires a ticket.
Once the campaign map is published, it will also be worth identifying the installations in the neighbourhoods to extend your route beyond the central areas. The city’s themed routes will help visitors locate illuminated ornamental fountains, designer lighting and shop windows created by design schools, as well as other places connected with shopping and Christmas traditions.
Barcelona’s Christmas lights: how they have evolved in recent years
Barcelona’s Christmas lighting has evolved considerably over recent seasons. Traditional decorations along shopping streets have been joined by designer installations, illuminated structures, decorated façades and audiovisual displays, extending the experience beyond the main avenues.
2023: the first lighting projects with a distinctive identity
One of the trends shaping the recent evolution of the Christmas lights is the creation of designs for specific streets. Passeig de Sant Joan was one of the standout locations, with an installation by Barcelona-based studio Brosmind featuring comic-book windows, festive icons and visual references to manga and the kawaii aesthetic.
The project aimed to connect the lighting with the commercial and cultural surroundings of Fort Pienc while introducing a recognisable visual language that differed from traditional Christmas decorations.
2024: more kilometres of lights and decorative features in the neighbourhoods
In 2024, the city council expanded the Christmas lighting to cover more than 110 kilometres of illuminated streets and public spaces. The campaign also introduced illuminated structures in different districts and special displays on distinctive buildings and in public spaces.
Large decorative figures helped spread the festive atmosphere across different neighbourhoods, while the main shopping avenues continued to attract visitors to some of the most popular routes.
Passeig de Sant Joan retained the Brosmind design, reinforcing the idea that each shopping street can have its own decorations, tailored to its surroundings and with a distinctive visual identity.
2024 information: the figures and installations mentioned relate to that season, not to the confirmed lighting programme for 2026-2027.
2025: 126 kilometres of lights and five designer projects
The 2025-2026 campaign marked another step forward. The city council announced 126 kilometres of illuminated streets and public spaces, 16 kilometres more than in the previous season. According to the information published for that edition, the municipal budget for the lighting was approximately €3.8 million.
The main development was the consolidation of five designer lighting projects, created in collaboration with ADI-FAD, the Associació de Disseny Industrial. The installations were located in Plaça de Catalunya, Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, Carrer d’Aragó, Via Laietana and Passeig de Sant Joan.
The campaign also included lighting in streets across various neighbourhoods, on municipal market façades, at ornamental fountains and in other public spaces. The aim was to connect shopping routes with the city’s urban heritage and bring Christmas to more parts of Barcelona.
Artistically, Plaça de Sant Jaume hosted a light projection on the façades of institutional buildings, while other monuments around the city staged their own lighting displays.
2025 information: the 126 kilometres, the budget and the designer projects refer to the 2025-2026 season. The final figures and designs for 2026-2027 have yet to be published.
