Although Christmas lights start to be switched on several days earlier in the vast majority of towns and villages in Catalonia, and the festive atmosphere is already present from the end of November, at irBarcelona we like to think that the Christmas period, or rather the pre-Christmas period, doesn’t truly begin until the Espinelves Fir Fair is inaugurated, known in Catalan and officially as Fira de l’Avet d’Espinelves.
The village of Espinelves
The charming little village of Espinelves is located in the heart of the mountains, specifically in the Osona region, Girona province. It covers just about 18 km² and has around 200 inhabitants, and is about 100 km from Barcelona (a little over an hour’s drive).
Despite the distance, many residents of the Ciudad Condal, and of course from towns and villages across the Catalan provinces, travel to Espinelves to honour a lovely tradition: buying the Christmas tree.
All the information about the Espinelves Fir Fair 2026
In 2026, the Espinelves Fir Fair will take place from XX to XX December and will celebrate its 45th edition. As one might easily guess, the main star of the fair is the fir tree, of which, at the roughly ten dedicated stalls, between 3,500 and 4,000 specimens are sold each year.
Even so, that’s obviously not the only thing to be found in the always charming, and at times rather steep, little streets of Espinelves. There are also plenty of artisan stalls where you can buy lovely gift items, as well as food products (sausages, cheeses and nougat), along with the now familiar street food stalls.

Map and How to Get to Espinelves from Barcelona
Given its location in the heart of the mountains and the fact that it is a very small village, and therefore not well connected by public transport, the fastest and most efficient way to get to Espinelves from Barcelona is by private vehicle (car or motorcycle). Nevertheless, it is possible to reach Vic by bus or train and from there take a bus to Espinelves.
By car or motorcycle
The small size of the village and the large number of people attending the fair each year make it quite difficult to park, especially on public holidays when many more people come to the fair, as well as on days when the fair coincides with the Vic Medieval Market (since many people take the opportunity to attend both events on the same day).
In the “Highlighted Information” link above, you will find a map of the village showing the designated areas for vehicle parking.
By bus (from Vic)

Vic Medieval Market

Many people take advantage of the public holidays during the December long weekend to, in addition to visiting the charming mountain village of Espinelves during its fir fair, do the same with the city of Vic, where roughly at the same time its famous medieval market is held.
The mere 20 km separating the two towns (less than 30 minutes by car) is a good reason to visit both events on the same day.
