The Grec, or Festival Grec, is best known as Barcelona’s festival dedicated to theatre and dance, although it also embraces other performing arts such as music and circus.
In addition, this summer festival is one of the most iconic, long-standing and well-established events on Barcelona’s cultural calendar, having first been held in 1976.
Why is it called the Grec?

The festival is known by the curious name “Grec” — which means Greek in Spanish — because some of its most important performances, as well as its opening event, take place at the Teatre Grec (Greek Theatre in English).
The theatre was designed for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition and is located within the Teatre Grec Gardens, on Montjuïc Hill.
Grec Festival 2026 Edition
The 2026 edition, as is tradition, takes place in the summer, specifically on selected dates in June, throughout the whole of July, and during the first week of August.

Grec Festival 2026 venues
The long duration of the Grec Festival, together with the large number of events scheduled throughout the festival, means that there are also many venues hosting its theatre, music and dance performances.
In its 2026 edition, the Grec features a total of 37 venues, including theatres and other cultural spaces. These are divided between those belonging to Grec Montjuïc, located on and around Montjuïc Hill, and those forming part of Grec Ciutat, spread across the rest of the city.
Map and how to get to the Grec 2026 venues
As there is no single venue for the Grec, when travelling to each of its locations—and depending on your needs, personal interests, programme schedule and the location of the theatre or venue—it is generally more convenient to use public transport (metro, bus, taxi) or your own private vehicle. You can consult the map to see all the Grec 2026 venues.
